mysterious gooseberries

Sometimes I create and have no idea what it’s about. Like this vase. I marked the surface of the clay with vines and lots of tiny round shapes that resemble berries. In fact, I think I made the little stamp I use for the round shapes by pressing into clay some red berries that grow on a Yaupon Holly tree in my driveway.

I glazed the vase with three glazes that I’ve made. A base glaze that isn’t really much of any color, but when the two copper glazes goes over the top, it freaks out and turns golden. Who knew?

So the vase was a surprise to me when I pulled it out of the kiln. And that is when I recognized the golden fruit, gooseberries, on its surface.

A poem – Gooseberries

I'm not sure that I've every met
a gooseberry before
But then there are lots and lots
of things that are mysteries to me

Maybe one day I'll come across a gooseberry bush
and I'll be prepared for its citron fruit
its plump dangles
and maybe I'll pick some
to mash into jam

I wonder what it will taste like?
