dyeing Progressive tones

Creating tones of a color means that you move a pure color like the red pictured here to black, creating gorgeous shades of progressively browned and duller versions of red.

 step 1

Select a color you want to tone. The color pictured in the banner on this page is Color 2+2 in the Van Gogh Palette, a vibrant bright red. Prepare the dye solution for the color you wish to tone by measuring the dyes for that color in a liquid measuring cup and dissolving them in 1 cup of boiling water. Additionally prepare your Toner Solution by dissolving 4.40 g of Bronze Toner powder in a separate cup of boiling water.

Prepare 8-3 1/2” x 36” strips of wool fabric (or 8 skeins of 22 g wool yarn). See my directions.

step 2

In a large turkey roaster or canner, place 8 wide-mouth half-gallon jars (labeled 1, 2, 3, etc.). Fill jars half full of tepid tap water. Fill roaster pan or canner with enough water to immerse the jars about half way up their sides. Measure 1 tablespoon of the dye solution into each jar (for solutions that are red, orange, or yellow). Use only 2 teaspoons for solutions that are blue, purple, or green. Then measure into each jar the Toner Solution according to the schedule on the TONER CHART. Measure into each jar 1/2 teaspoon of COLOR SMART™ CRYSTALS.

Step 3

Add 1/16 yard of wool fabric (or 22 grams wool yarn) to each jar. Add tepid tap water to top off jar (leave a little head room). Lift wool up and down a couple of times with tongs to make sure that all the dye is distributed evenly across the wool.

 turn on the heat.

 Step 4

Heat up slowly to 190 degrees F so that wool has time to absorb and the dye levels. Dunk at 30-minute intervals. Do not go on to the next step until the color is evenly distributed across the wool. If color is separated or splotchy, dunk wool well and continue to heat, checking and stirring at 30-minute intervals.

step 5

After the color has leveled and the dye bath has reached 190 degrees F, remove wool from each jar one at a time (so that you make sure to return the wool in the jar it came out of.) Add to dye water in jar 1/2 teaspoon of CITRIC ACID CRYSTALS per 1/16th yard of wool fabric (or 22g of wool yarn). Replace wool in the jar it came out of, dunking each wool piece well to keep the color even.

STEP 6

Turn up heat and maintain temperature 200-212 degrees F for 60 minutes, dunking wool every 15 minutes to achieve the most even color. After 60 minutes, turn off heat and remove wool from dye bath immediately (the water may not completely exhaust, especially when dyeing darker values, so do not worry if there is a little color left in the water). Do not let wool sit in dye bath to cool down. If you do, the dye residue left in the water will spot the wool as the dye molecules cool off and drop out of the suspension. Allow wool to cool before rinsing on low spin cycle to remove excess water and drying on delicate cycle. You may use liquid fabric softener and dryer sheets. I do!
